Letter to Ed Markey

Representative Markey:

I am writing to express my strong opposition to
additional funding for the war in Iraq beyond the minimum amount it will take to
remove US forces from that country. The US has failed (it's not even clear what
the goal was) and it is time to remove US troops. The terrorists will then at
least not have the cause of expelling US forces or killing US collaborators. I
urge you on behalf of myself and my wife, Ilyse Robbins Mohr (same address) to
vote against the additional $82 billion of funding.

The most urgent problem facing this country right
now is health care (not social security as the President would have us believe).
Small businesses like mine, local governments like Watertown, and individuals
are all being terribly affected by the spiraling costs of health care. Watertown
has no idea how it's going to handle the insurance costs for its public service
employees and the money is and will be taken away from needed public services.
We have fewer teachers in our schools and deteriorating infrastructure (to name
just a couple of the more obvious effects) simply because of rising insurance
costs. My family insurance rates have gone from $657/month in 2002 to $944/month
in 2004. That's an increase of 44% in two years. In that time, my salary
increased $5,000/year or 7%. So, of the $5,000/year more I am making, $3,444 or
69% is going to health insurance. With another 4-5% going to inflation that
means 75% of my salary increase does not benefit my family. So much for an
increasing standard of living – we are slipping backwards. Something
must be done. Where is the leadership on this issue? We would vote for any
candidate who says that healthcare costs will be the one and only issue he/she
addresses – that's how important we think it is.

Sincerely,

Glen Mohr

PS. The last time I wrote (February 2003) I
received a reply that you were unable to reply to constituents outside your
district but I was then and am now in your district.
