At the block party
we collected money for planting new trees on our street. The first step is to
give the trees a place to grow and that means turning the asphalt strips between
the sidewalk and the street into soil again. Trees don't like it when their
roots are covered with asphalt. Also I talked with a number of people at the block party who
said they wished there was a grass strip in front of their house instead of
asphalt.
Today I called the
DPW and talked to Ed Baptista who told me I just had to put in the request and
they would come and rip up the asphalt and put down soil and seed it.
We had a block party on Commonwealth Road today and more than
85 people showed up (representing more than half
the households on the street) including a 1–month old, a 2–week old,
and one due any minute. The weather was perfect and there was an
abundance of good food and beer. Special thanks to Kevin Sutter, Jason Kennedy and Earl Kadiff who
stood over hot grills in 90 degree heat and to Varter Sirinoglu for
bringing back all the rental tables and chairs.
I’m so happy it turned out a success and I will gladly organize the next one!
